We are thrilled to announce the successful pilot of our Student Success: Foundations for Self-Management program and our plans to roll it out to correctional facilities throughout New York State. Additionally, we are excited to extend this impactful program to local schools, helping students develop essential life skills.
Sammy Davis, co-owner of D5 Consulting Group and Undersheriff of Broome County, has led this groundbreaking program with remarkable dedication and passion. Based on the book by Professor Gian Paolo Roma, the program aims to teach life skills and success strategies to incarcerated individuals, empowering them to realize their full potential.
Over a period of five weeks, Davis volunteered his time to lead nearly sixty incarcerated men and women in group discussions at Broome County Jail. He adapted Professor Roma’s comprehensive 15-week course into a more accessible and encouraging format, ensuring it met the unique needs of the participants.
Davis shares, "It's an amazing program, and we at D5 are incredibly proud to be able to pilot it and provide a much-needed service to the incarcerated. People thought the incarcerated wouldn't like the course or would not engage. Just the opposite, they have embraced it. They have actually bypassed other things to be able to participate in the class."
Professor Roma’s textbook, Student Success: Foundations of Self-Management, serves as the cornerstone of the program. It encourages readers to explore fundamental questions such as “Who am I?” “What type of person do I want no to be?” “What are my values?” and “What do I really want in life?” These introspective questions are examined through the “5 C’s” of self-management, providing a robust framework for personal growth.
Roma reflects, "The textbook emerged from my unending lifelong struggle to figure out who I am, what I want to stand for, and why I am the way that I am. The central premise of the textbook is that without luck or inherited wealth, behavioral skill is a precondition for realizing individual and societal potential."
The purpose of this pilot program is twofold:
1. To help individuals fulfill their unrealized potential.
2. To provide the tools necessary for participants to leave the world a better place than they found it.
The positive reception and high level of engagement from the participants has been amazing! Seeing the transformative impact of the program firsthand, we are now excited to expand it to other correctional facilities throughout New York. By doing so, we aim to extend this invaluable opportunity for personal development and self-management to more individuals.
We have also received valuable feedback from incarcerated individuals, expressing that if they had access to such courses during their school years, it might have significantly changed the trajectory of their lives. Motivated by this feedback, we have modified the program to work with local schools, helping students develop essential life skills early on.
At D5 Consulting Group, we believe in the power of education and self-reflection to drive personal and societal change. This program is a testament to our commitment to these values and our belief in the potential of every individual, regardless of their circumstances.
We look forward to the continued success of the Student Success: Foundations for Self-Management program and its expansion across correctional facilities and schools throughout the state. Together, we can make a meaningful difference and help more individuals realize their potential.
Signed,
Sammy and Amira Davis
